We left last Saturday and traveled to the warm sunshine with Boom, Great Margie, Auntie Yoda, Uncle Craigles, Lucy, Auntie Mari, and Uncle Josh!
So here we go...a breakdown of the trip, with LOTS OF PICTURES, as you may have guessed.
Day 1- December 29, 2018: We left our house at 2pm, hung out at the airport, and then spent 6 hours on a plane (about 1.5 hours more than was necessary due to some delays before and after takeoff). We got to our rental home late...I don't even know what time...but I don't think the girls actually fell asleep until 11pm or so.
Day 2- December 30, 2018: GUESS WHO WAS WIDE AWAKE AT 6:30am? All three little people! We spent our first morning admiring our house, especially the backyard pool area. It was perfect for the girls.
Then we walked down the road (and down a big hill) to see the ocean. The girls had lots of fun climbing on the rocks. And then we had to walk the big hill back UP to get back to our house.
Then it was POOL TIME! And HOT TUB TIME! And cabana time. And lunch time.
Later on, it was BEACH TIME! We found a great public beach with beautiful ocean water and fun atmosphere.
Later, it was back to the house for tostadas (made by Mari and Josh), margaritas, and chill time before bed.
Day 3-December 31, 2018: The girls were up by 7am again, and the sunrise over the palm trees was beautiful. This was our first real sunny day, so we soaked it in. The girls decided to wear their matching COUSIN SHARK shirts. If you haven't heard the "Baby Shark" song, google it (and then don't be mad at me when you can't get it out of your head). Anyway, Lucy got the cousins matching shirts for Christmas and they are adorable.
After breakfast, we headed down to the Cabo Marina for a glass bottom boat tour! The boat guide immediately took a liking to Maya.
The scenery was breathtaking, and we had fun looking at all the fish through the glass bottom boat.
There were cranes and seals too, along with the cool fish. And we even saw a boat named "Gratitud" as we headed back into the marina.
At "Land's End" (the arch), we got the chance to take some family photos. Callie loved being at the front of the boat.
After our boat ride, we headed to a little restaurant right on the marina dock.
When we got back to the house, it was POOL TIME again!
And later we had some down time inside, and some of us even got chair massages.
That evening, we hired a few chefs to come and cook us New Years Eve dinner. We had chicken, steak, and shrimp fajitas, mashed potatoes, bacon-wrapped asparagus, and even homemade CHURROS. So delicious. Callie was a fan (of the churros). I don't think any of us actually made it to midnight. I definitely didn't, though we heard a ton of fireworks right at midnight. And again at 2am. They take New Years Eve seriously down there.
Day 4-January 1, 2019: The new year started with some early morning shenanigans and more swimming!
And then another walk down to the ocean. There were lots of crabs on the rocks and sea urchins in the water.
And then, guess what? MORE POOL TIME. It was a cooler, cloudy day, but that's ok. The pool was warm!
Boom and Margie graciously babysat the girls so the six of us could go out to dinner in Cabo. Laura found a great restaurant right on the beach, called the Office. We were a bit early, so we stopped for margaritas at a different spot that made us feel way too old and lame (we denied the tequila shot ladies multiple times). But the Office restaurant had a fun vibe, and a cover band that was kind of awesome and kind of awful at the same time. Also, Chris ordered coconut shrimp and mashed potatoes that came in an actual coconut with the mashed potatoes both under and in the coconut shell!
Day 5- January 2, 2019: It was another beautiful sunrise, so we spent the morning outside playing games and relaxing.
And then we walked back down to the ocean! Maya LOVED climbing on the rocks, and Callie and Lucy enjoyed some hammock time.
While we were there, we saw some whales off in the distance. They were splashing and blowing and having a grand old time. So Chris and I decided to see if we could take the girls on a whale watching tour later. We went down to the dock and Chris just haggled a bit with one of the many guys down there trying to get customers. We ended up on a little boat, just the four of us, with a guy named Isidro who didn't speak much English. It was very wavy out on the water, and I'm glad we all have strong stomachs. It took awhile to see a whale, but we finally did see a couple! After the boat ride we found a pizza place. Callie POUNDED down her pizza. Up until that point she had eaten a lot of cereal, salami and fruit, and not a whole lot else.
After lunch we met everyone back at the same beach we had been to before. The girls had fun playing in the sand and splashing in the ocean, and we had fun watching them.
For dinner that night we decided to try out a little taco stand not too far from our place. It was so fun, and the food was AMAZING. Callie enjoyed her "strawberry water," which looked more like a virgin strawberry daiquiri than strawberry water! She also apparently had had enough family time and brought her Harry Potter book...ha! Maya had fun being goofy with Auntie Mari and Uncle Josh. She really glommed on to Uncle Josh this trip! He didn't get much peace and quiet when she was around.
Day 6- January 3, 2019: On the day we (were supposed to have) headed home, a few of us made one final trek down to the ocean. Maya was a major slowpoke coming back up the big hill.
Great Margie, Boom, Auntie Mari and Uncle Josh flew out on a different flight than the rest of us. They made it home on time. You may have noticed from my few clues that something may have gone awry in our travels home. It did. But before we got to the airport for our first flight to Houston, we stopped for lunch and the girls found a playground.
We made it to Houston, but there were delays on both ends of the flight (again)...and...we didn't make it through customs in time to make it on our 2nd flight. So once again, the girls were up WAY TOO LATE (9:30pm) and we had to wake up at 4:30am this morning to catch our 7:40am flight home.
The girls were champs, considering the lack of sleep. We landed around 10:30am this morning and are now just counting down the minutes until bedtime. At least Chris and I are. The girls are deliriously bonkers.
Anyway. I hope from all these pictures you can see that it was a WONDERFUL trip. Before we left, Callie used the iPad to take a few pictures of our rental house. There were some issues with the cleanliness and a couple of things weren't working the best, but overall it was a great place for our group. Especially the back yard pool area!
And THE FOOD. You guys, the food was so delicious. I have always been a Mexican food fan, but it is obviously another level when you eat real Mexican food IN Mexico. I had chicken fajitas, tostadas, tacos, chorizo queso, homemade churros...all the things. Others had fish tacos, and steak and shrimp tacos and fajitas and fresh sea food. YUM.
And I ate my weight in GUACAMOLE. Like for real. We ordered it every time we went out. It was always served a little differently, and always tasted a little different, but ALWAYS DELICIOUS. I think my favorite was the one in the upper right corner- it has jalapeños AND dried cranberries in it.
So there you have it- our trip in a nutshell. I'm grateful that we had such a fun, lovely and safe trip, and that we can continue to enjoy traveling to amazing locations as a family like my dad always loved to do.
