Bottles

I've kind of been at a loss about what to post this week.  Callie started extended day preschool so she was gone all day Monday and today.  Yesterday was a great day.  No major screaming fits or attitude... just a pleasant day and we had fun.

Since Callie was gone I spent a lot of Monday and today holding a sleeping baby.  Which means I watched a lot of Netflix and laid on our bed.

And I'll be honest...I was a little bit bored!  I've been so used to the fast paced world of living with a preschooler, that just having to take care of a sleeping baby was...well...calm.

I'm sorry, future Maya, I don't mean you are boring, I just felt very strange being "forced" to lay in bed and hold you.  (Because remember your sleeping rules? You still hold fast to needing to do most of your napping in someone's arms).

But don't get me wrong, baby snuggles are THE BEST.  So I'll take as much as I can get, and I'm thankful to have this one-on-one time with baby #2.

Speaking of baby #2, she has ZERO interest in bottles.

Gulp.

We've tried different kinds of bottles.  We've tried it with me out of the house.  We've tried it when she's hungry.  We've tried it when she's not.  We've tried it when holding her.  We've tried it with her on her pink chair.

No matter what, we're met with either screaming resistance, or playing around not sucking.

So we have less than 3 weeks to get this figured out, or it is going to be a TOUGH transition when I go back to work.

Why is it that the only other things that go in her mouth she will suck on (almost) immediately, but will just gum or ignore the bottle EVERY SINGLE TIME?

If anyone has any suggestions, feel free to send them our way.

Weekend Wrap-Up

We had a really fun weekend!  It started Friday night when we went to Edinborough for some indoor play time at the bounce house and the gym.

Then on Saturday Callie participated in her first solo race!  She did the Toddler Trot as part of the TC Marathon weekend.  It was a 50 yard dash with a bunch of other 3-year-olds and it was awesome.

She was very proud of her "gold medal."

Later that night we went downtown to have dinner at Boom andBops' house...and then to Izzy's for ice cream!

Before bedtime we had some family cuddle time.

Kona wanted in on the fun, but couldn't figure out how to face the camera.
Today we went to church and then hung around the house.  Auntie Cat came over to play too!

Bouncy baby!

Then Chris and I went to the 1st game of the WNBA finals. The Lynx won!!!  We got to sit courtside with my parents, so we were REALLY close up to the players...our favorite is (who else?) Maya Moore!

G-ma and G-pa babysat again...and did some dancing!

I have 3 weeks left of maternity leave.  I can't believe how fast it has gone, and how long a "summer" I have had.  I hope I remember how to teach when I go back!

Favorite-Things-Phone-Dump Friday

This has been quite a week.  Monday feels like so long ago.  Here are the favorite things:

Favorite Thing #1: Miss Independent
She likes to do things on her own, which is just fine with me.
Unless it deals with water.

Favorite Thing #2: Miss Squish
Smiling more and screaming less...I'll take it.

Favorite Thing #3: The girls
LOVE THEM

Favorite Thing #4: Beautiful weather
Favorite Thing #5: Caribou
A place for Mommy and Baby to go during preschool.
A place to drive-thru 30 minutes before bedtime to calm cranky girls.

Favorite Thing #6: Family trip to the MOA

Favorite Thing #7: Preschool field trip to the Apple Orchard!
 Have a great weekend!

That Time When Your 3-Year-Old Floods the Upstairs Bathroom and You End Up with Holes in Your Mudroom Ceiling

So our mudroom ceiling currently looks like this:

Huh, you might say to yourself.  I wonder why they have holes in their ceiling?

Let me tell you what happened.  It was a string of unfortunate events leading up to one big catastrophe.

Around 1:15, nap time rolled around.  Callie actually napped both Monday and Tuesday, and since she had preschool today I figured she'd be tired enough to nap today too.  But after about 15 minutes she came down asking if she could have quiet time instead.

I decided not to fight the battle. So I went upstairs, put the timer on, and went back downstairs to try and get Maya to sleep.  She was doing great and playing with her toys.

Then Maya got fussy and I stopped paying attention to the monitor.

BIG MISTAKE.

After about 5 minutes I got Maya calmed down and started feeding her, and I heard the water running upstairs.  I yelled at Callie to turn it off, which in turn made Maya upset again, so I decided to just finish feeding her and then check on the three-year-old.  The water did not stop but I figured she was just playing in the sink like she likes to do sometimes.

BIG MISTAKE.

Five minutes later I decided to end the feeding early because I STILL heard the water.  I came up to find this:

You can't really see it, but there is a TON of standing water on the bathroom floor, and as you can see, the water also seeped out into the carpet outside the bathroom.  Her shirt is soaked and she isn't wearing pants or undies.  She spent at least the ten minutes that I was dealing with Maya downstairs, dumping full cups of water onto the floor.  Just for fun.  She also managed to dump some in her room.

Chris got home shortly after (thank goodness), talked to G-pa, and within an hour or so he and Chris were drilling holes in the ceiling trying to figure out the extent of the damage.

G-ma took  Callie since Chris and I were BEYOND pissed, and I took Maya and went out to eat with Adrea (who unfortunately for her had to witness almost the entire debacle).

Needless to say, we talked to Callie about how she was really in trouble.  Her iPad privileges are gone until the ceiling is fixed.  TROUBLE.

After I picked her up tonight, we were driving home and the Taylor Swift song "Trouble" came on.  I just started laughing and I couldn't stop.  Partly because of how we had talked about how she was in TROUBLE, and partly because I couldn't stop picturing the screaming goats version of the song.

Haven't seen it?  Here you go:

So there's the story.  Thanks to G-ma and G-pa for swooping in and helping us out when we were in crisis mode.  Family rocks.

I hope your Wednesday evening ended without you getting holes in your ceiling, because it really kinda sucks.

Sleep- Update

It is rather funny (and kind of amazing) that after Maya "posted" her sleeping rules, she broke a lot of them today.

The most exciting one she broke was SLEEPING UNTIL 6AM this morning!  She ate about 10:30 last night, didn't fall asleep until after 11, but the SLEPT TIL MORNING.  Like regular morning, not middle of the night morning.  I awoke with a start at 5:30am and looked at her sleeping away peacefully.  It was pretty awesome.

THEN, during two of her naps today SHE LET ME PUT HER DOWN.  The following two pictures show her napping OUT of my arms and on the bed on two different occasions.

You guys, I got to fold laundry!  And I didn't have to wake my left arm up after falling totally asleep.

I don't expect all of this great sleep stuff to happen again, though, because that would just be weird.  I've gotten used to losing feeling in my left arm because of holding a 13+ pounder just so, and being able to get stuff done during the day?  I have no idea what that is even like and can't fathom it still.

But I'll take WHATEVER baby steps she gives me...sleep related, that is.  Totally not ready for ACTUAL baby steps yet.

Maya's 5W Rules for Sleeping

Hey! My name is Maya.

Nice to meet you!
I'm a big 2-month-old now, so I'd like to share with you a couple rules I have about sleeping.  Sleep is pretty awesome, but I'm pretty particular about the who, what, when, where, and why (the 5Ws as my Mom calls them) as it relates to MY sleeping, as well as other members of my household's sleeping.

Let me break it down for you.

WHO:
When it comes to naps, it is important not to select WHAT you will be sleeping on (crib, bouncy chair, etc.) but WHO to sleep on.  Napping MUST be done on a WHO.  And  do not accept when the WHO tries to put you down on a WHAT when she thinks you are totally out.  Wake up and complain. Immediately.  As for which WHO to select? The obvious choice is Mommy, since she is a total sucker around the most, but Daddy comes in a close second.

Mom and Dad...AKA My human mattresses

But really anyone will do.

What can I say?  I love sleeping on family.
WHAT:
When it comes to sleeping, WHAT you look like is important.  Because if you're going to be spending so much time on with your WHOs, you need to look adorable.  So every once in awhile, let them put you down AND STAY SLEEPING so they can take precious pictures of you and remember (in their usual sleep-deprived state) that you are awesome AND capable of sleeping on your own.  I recommend something like this or this:

See what I did there?  Angelic.
WHEN:
This is important.  I recommend doing most of your good sleeping during the day.  That way, when you wake up at 2am to eat, you are well rested and don't need to fall asleep for 30-90 minutes after eating.  Sometimes you can make it 3 hours and really give your parents a treat.

They know that it is going to be an interesting night when it is after 10pm and you look like this:

You weren't wanting to go to sleep, were you Mom?
WHERE:
Really, the where should be anywhere BUT your bassinet.  I mean, you have to sleep there at night, right?  So for our other sleeps it is much better to sleep on someone (as I established during the WHO section).  But, when that is not possible (or your WHO tricks you into sleeping deeply enough), there are a few other acceptable places for sleep: the pink buzzy chair, the car seat, Mom and Dad's bed, and the baby carrier.

If I'm jiggled, rocked, or driven, I'll probably fall asleep.
Unless there are stoplights, then I'll just get mad.
WHY:
Why sleep? My mom and dad would probably say so that THEY can sleep.  But I know sleep is important so I can grow big and strong. My weigh=in at the doctor proved I'm doing my job there.  I also know that when I get enough sleep I am much happier.  And then I make cute happy faces like this:

It doesn't matter how tired you are, you can't resist this face!
So there you have it- my sleeping 5Ws.  I hope I have been helpful to all you babies out there.

Now go get some sleep.
