Glucose, Target and OCTOBER???
Blog Post by Kati:
I went and did my glucose test yesterday. It was a little irritating as I had to leave work early to go drink sugar water and sit for an hour. But it is done. I assume I'll hear from them if there is a problem.
And it is October on Thursday??? How did that happen? I like to do mental calendar math a lot to gauge how time is moving. So the other day I figured out that it is the same amount of time from now back to when I was in Colorado at the end of June as it is from now until the baby is born. And Colorado doesn't seem that long ago!
I keep getting comments from people on how huge they think the baby is going to be (based on how big my belly is now). Do I really look that big? I don't feel like I'm extraordinarily huge... the baby is just growing fast! :)
We went to register and Target on Sunday and were not too impressed. They don't have a whole lot of stuff (compared to Babies R Us, which is probably an unfair comparison) and it took them forever to figure out the registering gun for us. But we did it. I'm sure we'll have to add stuff because I have no idea if we have all of our bases covered. We tried to be somewhat methodical by using the list that Babies R Us gave us, but there is a TON of stuff on that list that they claim all new parents HAVE to have...and I'm a little skeptical. So we'll see. We didn't register for everything on the list. And we were still pretty random since we both have NO idea.
Work is ramping up so I usually am up early stressing about various things. But it is kind of nice to get out of bed with a little time to putz around on the computer and relax before having to get ready for the day. Already this Tuesday is off to a better start than last Tuesday, when I couldn't breathe out of my nose and was miserable. :)

Vikings/Weddings
Blog Post By Chris:
Well the Vikings are now 3-0. Hopefully they can keep up the win streak. Yesterday we went down to Lanesboro, MN for Sarah and Nathan's wedding. Nathan is Big Dave's younger, better looking brother. The wedding was awesome! They got married in Bethlehem Lutheran Church (a good start, just like us), and then they had the reception in this old barn. It was a very cool atmosphere, and the majority of the food was grown from the organic farm Nathan and Sarah work at. All in all it was a great wedding and we had a lot of fun seeing the Wicks and Hyndman families. And one last thing. My golf game is finally taking a turn for the better. I posted a good score this morning, but could have definitely shot lower (I had 7 birdie putts today, but couldn't convert). For those of you who have played with me in the last month, you know how good my putting has been. It was a frustrating day on the greens.
So long for now.

Confusing Messages
Blog Post By Chris:
Sometimes people say things and different people interpret it a different way. Let's say for instance I say that a catch a football player made was sick. Some would take it to mean that the play was awesome, and others would take it as the play was gross. You see what I am saying. Any need for further explanation? Good. So I have been noticing lately that sometimes The same saying can make a difference between a couple, and a soon to be family.
When Kati says that she is excited for bed, that statement meant something different 6 months ago.
When Kati says I need to take my bra off, that statement meant something different 6 months ago.
When Kati says "Pick up your clothes, clean the dishes, vacuum the basement..." Wait that's still the same as it was 6 months ago.
You can see how some of these messages can be very confusing to me. But I am slowly converting my mind into being a responsible adult :)

Cauliflower
Blog Post by Kati:
Week 27 info:
This week, your baby weighs almost 2 pounds (like a head of cauliflower) and is about 14 1/2 inches long with her legs extended. She's sleeping and waking at regular intervals, opening and closing her eyes, and perhaps even sucking her fingers. With more brain tissue developing, your baby's brain is very active now. While her lungs are still immature, they would be capable of functioning — with a lot of medical help — if she were to be born now. Chalk up any tiny rhythmic movements you may be feeling to a case of baby hiccups, which may be common from now on. Each episode usually lasts only a few moments, and they don't bother her, so just relax and enjoy the tickle.
We had a doctor's appointment today. I didn't do the glucose test today, but need to go in early next week to do it. Baby Goose was moving around a lot today so we were able to hear her movements along with the heartbeat. The doctor thought she might have had the hiccups, too. We're now at the stage where we go to the doctor every 2 weeks instead of every 4 weeks. It is hard to believe there is only 13 weeks left!
Here is a picture that was taken of us last weekend at a family friend's wedding. Just thought I'd post it for those who don't see us very often to see the baby bump- though I'm wearing a black dress that is slimming...haha. Not really! We actually have 2 more weddings to go to in the next couple of weeks. It will be a busy fall.
We just booked a long weekend to Chicago for the middle of October when I have a day off of school. My sister Laura lives there and I'm excited to be able to visit her and her boyfriend Drew one more time before the baby comes! It will be a nice little getaway. We're flying there-thankfully my doc said it was just fine.
I'm almost back to normal- still stuff in my nose but it is livable. I'm glad to have the weekend to relax a little!

I got bored by the green and yellow dots and thought we needed some more pink. :)

My Nose: The Update...and other blessings
Blog Post by Kati:
Thank you to everybody for the positive thoughts and wishes that were sent my way. I am better today. I only got up maybe 4 times last night instead of 8 or 9, so that was a big improvement from the start! The gunk is slowly working its way out of my system so I should be fine in a couple of days. I feel a little sheepish reading over my last blog entry, but that is what blogging is, right? Just being real...
Chris' grandparents brought over a Neti Pot for me to try, so I just did it. And I feel better already! It is a very funny feeling to be bent over the sink with one nostril down and a mini tea-pot looking thing stuck in the other one and have the solution work its way through one nasal passage and down through the other, but it seems to be working! So thanks, Grandma and Grandpa G! :)
In addition to that, Chris' sister Cathleen brought us over dinner tonight which is currently in the oven. She makes awesome enchiladas and it will be nice to have a homemade meal that I don't have to do anything for! Thanks Cathleen! :)
Once again I'm reminded that our support system is absolutely amazing...so many blessings!
We go to the doctor again on Friday. I think it is the glucose test, so I'll be drinking a big sugared drink before some fun blood work. I can't believe we're heading into the third trimester!!!

My nose
Blog Post by Kati:
I hate my nose right now. I literally hate it. I wish I could chop it off of my head.
Over the weekend I developed my first head cold of my pregnancy.
Some background information for those of you who are unaware:
I am terrible to be around when I have a cold. In normal, unpregnant situations, I take drugs like Vicks Nasal Spray (how do people live without it when they have colds??? I'll never understand) and all sorts of cold medicines that (every time) I hope will be more effective (than the last time). I sniff, I try to blow my nose and nothing comes out (though NO ONE believes me- it is true for a lot of the time!), and am generally crabby. My family can attest to this fact and are no doubt thankful that they've passed the "dealing with Kati's colds" baton off to Chris.
So...you can only imagine what it is like when I don't have the option of my lovely drugs. It isn't pretty. I basically haven't slept in 2 days, my nose is even more congested, and every uncomfortable part of this cold seems seriously enhanced.
Chris has been a true patient champion in dealing with me and so tonight I gave him the night off. He's off with his buddies and I'm perfectly content to be home wallowing in my own misery alone so I can sniff to my heart's content and not feel bad about annoying the crap out of him!
In the grand scheme of things, I will survive and I feel ridiculous even complaining at all. But I'm tired, crabby, and just need to vent. We are so lucky that everything has gone so smoothly so far, so if this is the worst I have to deal with- I'm very thankful.
But still,
I'll end with a poem that my uncle Peter sent me:
It doesn't breathe,
It doesn't smell,
It doesn't feel so very well.
I am disgusted with my nose.
The only thing it does, is blows.

Yes I Rub Feet
The things you do for the ones you love. Or at least the things you do so you can watch football. Well the Vikings are 2-0 to start the '09 season. This may be the year that they make the superbowl and win the whole thing. Our little girl will be somewhere around 1 month old at that time. She was a super kicker again tonight. There have been many occurrences where she is not kicking, but the second that I put my hand on Kati's belly she starts going crazy. I THINK that she knows it is me and starts moving around.
The Babies R US experience was pretty crazy. There were a ton of people there. The weirdest thing was that people kept on trying to give us advice. Most of it wasn't that great. And yes by people I mean other customers. There is a lot of stuff in that store, and so much that happens every day in a baby's life. It will be nice to start getting all the stuff we need, and the nursery all organized. I am actually really excited to see how Kona does. Boxers are very well known to be big family dogs. I think Kona will have some shock value the first week or so, and will have to get used to the baby crying, but after that I think she will love the baby as much as we do. Kona was my first baby so she will always have a special place in my heart.

I NEED FALL WEATHER/Baby-land
Blog Post by Kati:
So hot!!! So so hot!!! I'm ready for crisp fall air...what I like to call "apple orchard weather." This week I just got so warm so fast...humidity...ugh!
Anyway. I'm sitting on our big comfy chair right now and Chris is giving me a foot massage. Somehow the BOTTOMS of my feet are puffy. Like really puffy. And I was just wearing flip flops today. I need to make a trip to Famous Footwear. I think ballet flats are in my future. I hope they still exist!
We went to baby-land today: a.k.a. Babies R Us. Whew.
It was crazy busy there- lots of other couples registering, other huge pregnant people, strollers and general chaos all over the place! I suppose I should have expected that on a Saturday afternoon. We were there for about an hour and barely made a dent on the "suggestion list" they gave us and the other suggestions we've gotten from people. But we did find a very cute travel system (stroller/baby carrier/car seat combo). It has a black and white pattern with some subtle yellow accents. A slightly lighter color of yellow than Sunbeam Glow that is the yellow of the baby room...haha. Other than that we registered for a bunch of infant care stuff, bath stuff, a pack-n-play, a swing...and some other stuff I don't remember. We'll have to go back some time, as well as hit up Target, but at least we got started!

English Hothouse Cucumber (???)
Blog Post by Kati:
Week 26 Info!
The network of nerves in your baby's ears is better developed and more sensitive than before. She may now be able to hear both your voice and your partner's as you chat with each other. She's inhaling and exhaling small amounts of amniotic fluid, which is essential for the development of her lungs. These so-called breathing movements are also good practice for when she's born and takes that first gulp of air. And she's continuing to put on baby fat. She now weighs about a pound and two-thirds and measures 14 inches (an English hothouse cucumber) from head to heel.
Happy Friday! I am exhausted this morning and looking forward to the weekend. I love Fridays at work because we can wear jeans and TENNIS SHOES!!! That is the best thing ever. I have found that my shoes from last year don't feel so good now. Especially by the end of the day- my feet get swollen...ick...
Baby Goose has been really active the past couple of days in the mornings and evenings. A couple nights ago I think she might have had the hiccups...or just kept kicking over and over!
Hopefully we can begin the registering process this weekend. I've gotten some great suggestions from people so I'm feeling a little less overwhelmed by the task. And excited to get started. I also want to look into childbirth classes and sign up for those soon. Gotta get stuff done!
Enjoy the weekend! Thanks for reading!

Dreaming...Dancing...
Blog Post by Kati:
I had a really great baby dream last night. I don't remember much about it except we had a baby named McKenzie (not on our name list, by the way!) and she lived in a jewelery store (????) at first but I went to pick her up and take her home. And it was so fun having a baby at home. When I woke up I was so sad that it wasn't real...yet! :)
I have not been doing a great job of doing actual exercise lately, so I went to my hip-hop dance workout class today. And once again, I felt totally ridiculous be-bopping around with my big belly, but it is just so fun!

Football
Blog Post by Kati:
Well, football season has begun. That means knitting season for me. Though I haven't started yet, I'm sure I'll get a lot of baby booties done in the next few months. Though I should probably find a good pattern for little hats to expand my knitting repertoire. But I had the thought today while football was on that by the end of the football season, we'll have a baby. That is pretty crazy!
We went to the birthday party of Chris' cousin Jean's 1-year-old, Erik, today. It was fun to see him and his (almost) 3-year-old sister Anna. We got a little glimpse of our future! :) It was hilarious watching Erik eat his cake- he just took fistfuls of it. Adorable!
I took Kona on a long walk earlier tonight and by the end she was moving slower than me (which is totally ridiculous since I'm moving REALLLLY slow these days...especially up the hills that we have in our neighborhood!). She's a lazy little pup but she'll be such a good big sister! :)
The weekend flew by and now it is almost bedtime before another busy week. Baby Goose is doing a little dancing right now as I lay in our big comfy chair!

Rutabaga
Blog Post by Kati:
Week 25 info (a few hours early!):
Head to heels, your baby now measures about 13 1/2 inches. Her weight — a pound and a half — isn't much more than an average rutabaga, but she's beginning to exchange her long, lean look for some baby fat. As she does, her wrinkled skin will begin to smooth out and she'll start to look more and more like a newborn. She's also growing more hair — and if you could see it, you'd now be able to discern its color and texture.

Once again another vegetable (I assume it is a vegetable?) that I have not every had. This baby is opening up my eyes to so many new things already!
It has been fun being back at school with kids this week- the ones I had last year initially gave me funny looks, and then mustered up the courage to ask if I was having a baby. All the kids also ask what I'm having, and the girls are thrilled to hear a girl, and the boys are disgusted to hear a girl. They're pretty funny. I am definitely way more exhausted these days, though. I've taken "naps" at night the past few nights on our new comfy chair. Once 8pm rolls around it is hard for me to keep my eyes open.
As Chris said, Baby Goose has become more active the past few days. The best way I can think of to describe the feeling of her moving inside is a small version of the feeling you get on a ride when there is a drop (roller coaster, log chute, etc.) and you feel your stomach drop. I just like to picture her doing somersaults even though I'm pretty sure that isn't what she is really doing.
My mom gave me a journal she kept the last 4 months when she was pregnant with me. She wrote in it daily, and it has been really fun to read the different things her and my dad were doing to prepare for their first little girl! Though the idea that the baby adopts the taste buds of the mother during pregnancy is clearly false! My mom and dad ate lots of stuff I would never eat...haha! And my mom was the one who made most of the meals...hmm...that is not what I'm doing. :) As I've said before, I'm "cooking" the baby, so Chris gets to do the cooking for me AND the baby!
We have a busy weekend ahead so I wanted to post the weekly update tonight to ensure it gets done on time! Hope everyone had a great week!

More Kicks
Blog Post By Chris:
Well our little girl was a super mover again tonight. She was moving around pretty good when Kati was reading in bed. It is sort of weird to feel that on the outside, and I can not imagine what it must be like to have something moving around inside your belly. It sort of reminds me of the movie Alien. I guess it could be worse, she could be as ugly as Dan. Kati had her first day back at school today and made the comment that this fall is going to go by really fast. The second tri has gone by pretty slow, but this last part should go by really fast and then we can all enjoy our little girl.
Well our little girl was a super mover again tonight. She was moving around pretty good when Kati was reading in bed. Blog Post By Chris:
Well as you can see we finally have transformed our decade basement into something respectable. It is pretty nice to have good looking carpet and some nice furniture in the basement. We have banned Big Dave from the new furniture, so he has to sit in a steel reinforced chair from now on. Also like Kati said we have spent all 4 days of this weekend cleaning up around the house. We just kept so much useless stuff that we started running out of room to keep all of it. For those of you that have seen our house very messy, you will need to come over and see the transformation.
Okay enough about the house, on to baby news. Our little girl has been kicking a lot more recently. Instead of little flutters there is definite kicking and punching going on. It was so strong tonight that we could see it on the outside of Kati's stomach. It was hard to see it with Kati laughing and breathing, but still pretty cool to see. I have also been reading a different blog lately. The Stecher family lives down in Iowa, and we met them last year during our trip on RAGBRAI. The Stecher's have two girls, Olivia and Hannah. Beth posts on her blog about different things her girls do during the day. It has been really funny reading all the things their girls do and say. The reason I talk about this is because it is really interesting to see how kids change every single day. I am really looking forward to learning everything about our girl and seeing her change everyday.

Labor Day Weekend
Blog Post by Kati:
This weekend was definitely spend doing LABOR- on our house. We basically did our own version of "Extreme Home Makeover." And we still aren't done...but we did get a lot accomplished. The weekend of labor started on Thursday when we got new carpet installed. The basement shag is gone! Here is a shot of it in all it's glory:
And for those who haven't seen it, here is what our basement looked like (without our lovely hand-me-down furniture):

And now, thanks to new carpet, new furniture, and lots of cleaning and organizing, our basement now looks like this:
And here is the best chair ever- I predict lots of naps with the baby on this chair! It reclines and is super cushy. So comfortable!!!
We're still working on our upstairs- the baby room is painted and has new carpet, but is still housing some non-baby stuff until we can clean out the rest of our stuff.
Tomorrow I start my 6th year of teaching! I actually won't be doing as much teaching this year, but I'll be doing a lot of teacher support and coaching. I'm excited about the change and I think it is a perfect time to switch things up!
Now I'm so tired from the busy weekend, so I'd better get to bed...after a nap in the comfy chair! :)

WOW!!!!
Blog Post by Kati:
When we made the blog "public knowledge" in the middle of June, I added a counter to track the number of site visits that the blog gets. I was just curious and wanted to keep track of how many people are reading it (it is at the very bottom of the page on the left side).
Anyway, today we got over the 1000 visits mark!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
So thanks for reading everybody!!! It is awesome to see that people are so excited about Baby Goose! :)

Corn on the cob!
Blog Post by Kati:
Week 24 info:
Your baby's growing steadily, having gained about 4 ounces since last week. That puts her at just over a pound. Since she's almost a foot long (picture an ear of corn), she cuts a pretty lean figure at this point, but her body is filling out proportionally and she'll soon start to plump up. Her brain is also growing quickly now, and her taste buds are continuing to develop. Her lungs are developing "branches" of the respiratory "tree" as well as cells that produce surfactant, a substance that will help her air sacs inflate once she hits the outside world. Her skin is still thin and translucent, but that will start to change soon.
Happy Friday! This is the last weekend until kids start at work, as well as being a long weekend, so we're going to get a lot of stuff done at our house. Yesterday we got our new carpet installed!!!!! The shag in the basement is OUTTA there. Except the shag going up the bar. We kept that for fun. :) And we got new carpet in the baby's room. So this is the perfect time to start de-crap-ifying our house. As I've mentioned before, Chris and I are not the neatest people in the world, and we are also both bad at getting rid of stuff. Not any more. Come Monday night, the crap will be gone!!! I can't wait!!
I had my first real birth dream last night. It was very bizarre and I don't remember many details. I do remember that we were having twins, but it was my Dad who somehow birthed the first baby and I had the 2nd one. Thanks Dad...hahaha! :)
We've been getting some baby stuff from friends who have had girls which has been really nice. We will probably be registering pretty soon and that seems like it will be a big task. I have NO idea what to register for. I've heard that Babies R Us has a nice list that you can use to start with, so that is probably what we'll do.
My belly is just growing like crazy and I love it! People comment on it all the time, but that is ok. I don't mind. I'm just excited for Baby Goose to move around more frequently so that other people can feel her when they touch my stomach.
Hope everybody has a fun and safe Labor Day weekend!
